Alpinestars Bionic Knee Guard Review

When packing for a day of riding, as we start to load our gear, most of us are thinking about which gloves, jersey and pants to bring. As a new rider with only a couple years off-road riding experience, I think a lot about tip overs and protection when this happens. I think about elbow pads my helmet and of course knee guards. I have to consider the fact that I have to go to work on Monday. Even the best of riders will have a day where they need this protection as much as me, although I might need it more often.

I have tried several different types of knee guards from cheap to not so cheap. When I got my hands on the Alpinestars Bionic SX Knee Guard I was using the blank ones. The Bionics light weight, ventilated design makes for a very comfortable knee guard. The great fit inside the boot and overall better fit around the thigh and shin is also a plus. After a long day of riding I don’t have the pain of lifting a leg and feeling the brush burns from an uncomfortable knee guard with a less than perfect fit.

The Alpinestars Bionic SX Knee Guard has a thin three piece impact resistant, super durable, light weight flexible shell that hinges on a 4 large flat rivets which provide more movement, freedom and flexibility when moving around on the bike. The inside has firm padding that surrounds the calf and thigh and thicker padding on the side of the knee making it very plush and comfortable, giving you a great feel for the sides of the bike. It’s very easy to forget that you’re wearing them. Holding the Bionic in place is two adjustable straps at the calf and one adjustable strap above the knee. The straps come long for those riders with larger calf and can be cut to accommodate riders with smaller calves.
