PIRELLI
Scorpion MX mid/hard
We were not able to get hold of the MX Hard compound tires
from Pirelli but they did send the Scorpion MX Mid/ Hard tires
to try. Since Pirelli doesn’t make any one off tires for
SX/AX these are the same tires that the AMA pro SX riders are
using. We mounted them up and off to the track we went. Keep
in mind the track we are using for testing is rock hard, red
clay, mostly like concrete with a thin layer of dust on top…
the perfect place to torture test tires.
Initially we ran the front with 12 psi and it was all over the
place so we added 3 psi. At 15 psi the front stuck like it was
on Velcro. We ran the rear at 10 and it performed very well
with excellent braking and acceleration characteristics. In
fast sweeping corners the 110 rear wasn’t as confidence
inspiring as the wider 120’s in this test but it still
felt good and it was nice for sharper corners to be able to
skid in and blast out. On the trails these tires felt fantastic
the 110 rear made the bike feel very nimble and the 90 front
kept the front feeling secure. While these tires are not Pirelli’s
first choice for hard pack we were pleasantly surprised with
their performance.
