2007 KTM 450 SX-F
We had the good fortune to spend a day with
the 2007 KTM 450 SX-F. It was a dream date we had been praying
for. Much like a day on the beach with one of the Victoria’s
Secret models, we didn’t actually think it would happen.
But after a serious number of phone calls, we managed to swindle
one. The good thing is we got the KTM and as much fun as the
other model would be, a ride on the KTM wouldn’t require
any explanation other than telling you what it was like.
The first thing you notice when you climb aboard
is how at home you feel. The width of the tank and the relationship
between it and the saddle are distinctly Japanese, so much so
that I felt instantly at home on it. I was surprised to find
myself turning more laps, at a faster pace, with greater ease
than I could on my own bike on a much cooler day. It was 100
degrees with no breeze. There is one thing you will notice that
is different from the Japanese MXer's, how easy the KTM starts.
It snaps to life with just one simple push of a button. Weighing
in at a 230.6 lbs. without fuel it is 4 lbs. heavier than the
2007 CRF450R, a small price to pay for electric start. And it
is 2 lbs lighter than the YZ450F or Kawasaki's 450. If you are
trail riding, you will find the electric start is so nice you
will never want to go back. On the other side of the bar you
find the Magura hydraulic clutch, clutching was never easier
or more progressive.
The next thing you notice while riding or actually
don’t notice is the lack of a linkage at the rear shock.
The KTM’s rear end feels great riding through acceleration
bumps, it was compliant and in contact with the ground. On breaking
bumps it did bounce around a little with the stock settings
but turning the compression out a few clicks which settled things
down.
