We all know why we ride but we never get to hear why they ride. The movie "Why", brought to you by Transworld MX asks the question of an elite group of riders. Why do you ride? Produced by Don Maeda and Garth Milan and directed by Taylor Congdon.“They” are some of the top riders in the world including: Todd Potter, Ashley Fiolek, Broc Hepler, Ricky James, Antonio Cairoli, Andrew Short, Ryan Morias, Ronnie Renner, Mat Rebeaud and Travis Pastrana.
The film begins with a montage sequence and voice over suggesting reasons why people ride, from competitive nature to money/ fame to the solitude. The first interview is with Broc Hepler quoting Vince Lombardi and includes some sick footage of him on a private track whipping the graphics off the bikes plastic.
Next up is Mat Rebeaud at his practice facility in Switzerland, riding totally alone. It’s kind of surreal watching as he hits his trick ramp time after time with not a soul around to see. It begs the question does a tree falling unseen in the forest make a sound? Next we see Ronnie Renner getting upside down while whipping on a trick ramp. Then off to Mexico with Renner & Todd Potter for some play riding on natural terrain. Nothing sick, it’s just kind of cool to see guys at this level still messing about and having fun.
Cut to Ashley Fiolek racing in some seriously ugly mud conditions, hauling the mail. This girl rocks! Cut to wicked jump/ trick footage of Red Bull X Fighters. Next to an interview with Ricky James – the paraplegic blasting off jumps and through berms. Transition to Antonio Cairoli going so fast on a sand track in Lommel Belgium you can hardly believe it. This footage is so good it’s worth the price of admission. Then to Fitzland – Brian Deagens’ house for Todd Potter and Jeremy Lusk pushing each other to greater heights and then Andrew Short, blitzing a practice track.
The video closes with all the riders answering the question, why do you ride. The footage is top notch and very entertaining, the music is Euro Techno which is a pleasant change for a MX movie of this kind. We say get it. Watch it. You’ll dig it!
