Unlike the Pit Bikes we rode in Virginia, which are based on a mini motorcycle with 10 inch wheels, a Trials bike is a full sized motorcycle with a 21 inch front wheel and an 18 inch rear resulting in a ride that feels much closer to a full sized MXer. The main difference is there is no seat on a Trials bike. You stand the entire time while riding one, it’s good practice. The only thing we needed to do was get hold of one. We called GAS GAS USA to see if they had a bike we could use for a little while. Dale Malasek was good enough to hook us up with a TXT300 Pro.
Our Gas Gas Pro 300 had heaps of bottom end, produced via a quick reving, liquid cooled two-stroke powerplant with crankcase reed induction, cylinder size
is 294.1 cc fed by a
26 mm carburetor.
A thermostat controlled fan kept an eye on engine temps, blowing wind accross a single radiator when things got hot.
Bore & stroke
are 79 x 60 mm. The 6 speed gearbox is dis engaged through the feather light pull of the hydraulically-operated
clutch lever. Ignition
comes via CDI digital magnetic flywheel.
Engine lubrication
2.5 % Mixture, yes that is a very crazy 100 to 1 ratio. MX bikes usually run on a mixture of 36 to 1.
The chromoly, eliptical profile, perimiter frame
cradles the motor nicely making the bike feel slim with a very low center of gravity. The rear wheel is held in place by a lightwieght aluminum swinga rm. Front suspension
is a 40 mm adjustable telehydraulic fork. Compression adjustment has a range of 24 clicks and is located on the top of the right leg. Rebound adjustment has the same number and is on the left.
We left them set at 10 clicks out as the bike came. Rear suspension
is a variable progressivity system, single shock
with adjust ment for rebound as well as compression we left those at factory spec too. Stoppies are achiheved via 185mm front disc with 4-piston caliper.
Rear Brakes
150 mm. disc 2 pistons calipers. Both barakes require some getting used to, the back will throw you over the handle bar just when you least expect it!
Front wheel is
2.75 - 21,
rear wheel
4.00 - 18 of the tubeless
variety Kick Start
Forged aluminum
Brake and Shifter Pedal
Forged aluminium with flexible tip.
Wheelbase
is 52.36 inches
Seat Height
26.18. Yes there is seat height on a Trials bike. You will notice this the first time you smash you crotch on it.
Fuel tank capacity
is almost a full gallon. Don't plan on covering much gound when you ride one of these. dryweight is 149.91 lbs. Go to GAS GAS for other models.
