We were really stoked recently to see the box with Alpinestars written on the outside coming off the brown van, it meant a set of 2008 Tech 10’s, successor for the Tech 8, had arrived for us to review. With the Tech 10, Alpinestars wanted to improve the performance of the MX boot safety structure. To do this they built a double-hinged, inner torsion bar ankle support that protects the ankle and heel, while giving complete freedom, flexibility and feel to the rider by following the natural movements of the foot and ankle. There is no constraint until the point of over extension. Included in the box is a second, softer set of the replaceable inner bars, which allows the rider to customize the amount of flex. The system is designed to minimize the chances of sprains and twists, while protecting the ankle from lateral impacts. The bootie structure features PU protection and shock absorbing padding on the heel and ankles. A great feature of the Tech 10 is the perforated bootie is replaceable and washable. Nice for the guy with stinky feet.
When we first put the Tech 10’s on we found them to be extremely comfortable, they didn’t feel super stiff like most new boots the first few times you wear them. It was as if they were already broken in. When riding with them we found the toe cup fits perfectly between the shifter and foot peg allowing you to throw them on and ride without having a long period of adaptation to get used to them. But by the end of the day, we found the torsion bar on the inner ankle of both boots, rubbing on the ankle, creating a noticeable amount of discomfort. If you find the same thing happening, don’t be discouraged, the rubbing stops being an issue after three or four rides. Just like any other new set of boots, there is a short break in period.
These boots are not cheaply made nor are they cheap to purchase. At $459.95 they are one of the most expensive boots on the market but they are worth the money. Ankle protection is vital and freedom of movement is vital. No all boots provide this and with the Tech 10 you get what you pay for.
