Fans urged to vote for Women’s Motocross Star
17-year-old women’s motocross star Ashley Fiolek has been nominated by the Women’s Sports Foundation for the coveted Sportswoman of the Year award.
The Sportswoman of the Year award has in the past gone to such sports legends as Mary Lou Retton, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Martina Navratilova, Venus & Serena Williams, Steffi Graf, Mia Hamm, and Bonnie Blair, among others.
Fiolek, who was born profoundly deaf, earned her nomination through an outstanding first full season as a professional competitor. Fiolek currently leads the Women’s Motocross Association Championship points standings going into the final round of the series run this weekend with the American Motocross Festival at Steel City Raceway in Delmont, PA.
Among the other nine athletes that join Fiolek as nominees for the Individual award are 200m Olympic Gold Medalist Veronica Campbell- Brown, Natalie Coughlin, who won six swimming medals at the Beijing Olympics, gold-medal gymnast Nastia Liukin, LPGA star Lorena Ochoa, and top-ranked skier Lindsey Vonn.
“Being recognized alongside Olympic Gold Medalists and seasoned professionals in mainstream sports is so exciting,†Fiolek said. “I would love to win, but just to be placed alongside these women is a big accomplishment. This is an amazing achievement for Ashley and motocross in general,†said Dominica (Miki) Keller, President of the Women’s Motocross Association. “Having a motocross athlete nominated alongside Olympians shows the strength of our sport and the recognition of the sacrifices and hard work of our athletes.â€
