BELL MOTO 9 MX Helmet Review

Are you ready to start wearing the most comfortable helmet we’ve ever tested? If so, step up to the New Bell MOTO-9. It’s everything we’ve ever wanted in a helmet, and more. The 9’s predecessor, the MOTO-8 had the fastest drying liner of all the helmets we have tested and was often our first choice when packing gear for a day of riding. For us, putting on a nasty, wet, sweaty helmet after it’s been sitting between motos is one of our least favorite things to do. With its fast drying liner, the MOTO-8 quickly became our “go-to” helmet. In it’s new form it dries just as fast. Plus the MOTO-9 uses thicker, super plush check pads, making for a pillow like feel, which we love as well.

The new magnetic cheek pad system makes dis-assembly and reassembly for cleaning super easy. Usually we have to fight with cheek pads to get them into place, not anymore. The Magnafusion Emergency Release System (MERS) is designed to allow slide out cheek pad removal to facilitate easy helmet removal in the event of emergency. It’s a really clever safety feature with the extra benefit of making assembly easier.
Another emergency, safety feature is; the inside top was specifically designed to accommodate the Shock Doctor Helmet Eject Removal System which contains a small inflatable bag that when inflated, pushes the helmet off the top of the riders head thereby eliminating any tugging action of the helmet during removal which in turn could reduce the potential for secondary neck or spine injuries.

Check pads are held in via magnets and are a breeze to install.

The removable, washable comfort liner is made from X-Static, a silver-woven antimicrobial and antibacterial material that wicks moisture away from the head and kills off 99.9% of odor causing bacteria. The new MOTO-9 features a souped-up version of Bell’s Velocity Flow Ventilation system, which is designed to pull air through the helmet to keep the rider cooler. A  TriMatrix Composite shell keeps weight low and strength in the right places, while the Flying Bridge Visor is easily adjusted with two QuickFlip screws that firmly hold the visor in place. These are easy to adjust with a glove on and we’ve done it several times while riding.

Quick flip screws make visor adjustment a cinch

The patented Magnefusion strap keeper replaces the typical strap snap with a magnetic solution that easily engages and secures the strap end. This works great but it leaves a larg-ish loop that catches on our neck brace. It’s the only shortcoming we found and we can live with it. The MOTO-9 carries over Bell standards like an integrated, removable roost guard, padded chin strap with D-ring closure, Snell 2010 approved and a five year warranty.  Included with each helmet is a deluxe padded helmet bag.

We feel the BELL MOTO-9 might just be the best MX helmet we have ever worn.
