MONSTER ENERGY KAWASAKI’S ABBOTT EARNS BEST ENDUROCROSS FINISH

Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Destry Abbott concluded the AMA Maxxis National Endurocross Series with his best career EnduroCross finish, bringing home seventh during a wild race at the Orleans Arena.
Abbott started the night off right with a second-place finish in his heat race and advanced directly into the main event. With a decent gate pick, he shot off the line on his Kawasaki KLXâ„¢450R but was hit twice before making it to the second turn. This cost him valuable positions. He continued to ride strong and finished the night with a solid seventh-place.
“I felt my speed was pretty good and I definitely felt like I had the chance to be in the top five,” said Abbott. “It was a good day overall since making it to the main event is very tough.”
Monster Energy Kawasaki added an extra bike underneath its tent in Las Vegas with the addition of Damon Huffman, who finished on the podium at the previous two EnduroCross rounds.
Huffman made it to the last chance qualifier, where he passed the top two riders just before the finish line for the victory and a spot in the main event. After riding the heat, semi-final, and last chance qualifier, he rode a solid main event and finished just behind Abbott in eighth.
“I had a second-row start and my plan was to take my time and hopefully sneak around the inside but the guys in front of me held the first turn pretty tight,” said Huffman. “In the first rock pile, I saw that some riders had gotten held up so I was going to take my time, but I got taken out myself. It was a little frustrating but that’s how this type of racing goes.”
In 2008, the AMA Maxxis National EnduroCross Series will be expanding to eight rounds with Las Vegas hosting the season opener on July 5.
