About The LAB
In 1993, in the midst of a national retail slump and Orange County’s bankruptcy, the LAB Holding team invented the concept of an “anti-mall” to meet the demands of urban youth dissatisfied with the homogenization of conventional malls.
Out of the disarray of a vacant military night goggle factory, the LAB (acronym for Little American Businesses) arose through the creative “deconstructing” of the 3 existing structures into a sophisticated and focused retail complex. Materials removed from the redevelopment were reconstructed as walls and planters throughout, therefore comprising a “recycled” center. The central “Living Room” indoor-outdoor courtyard invites customers to “hang out” with couches, community table, magazine stand; and hosts regular poetry readings, local musicians, community functions, and art openings.
Anchored by Urban Outfitters, The LAB plays host to local entrepreneurs including Crew Salon, Arth, Eye Society, Blends, and now Troy Lee Designs. Restaurants Gypsy Den, Habana, and Zipangu Japanese fusion lounge serve customers from breakfast to late night cocktails.
Over 15 years old, The LAB continues to garner local awards and international press as it evolves artistically and culturally with its core “young at heart” clientele.
